Brick Repointing

The maintenance of the home is essential as it ensures that the structure of the house remains strong. Generally, homes with bricks are often affected when the foundation is not laid properly.

The result of this "badly laid foundation" eventually leads to gaps in the wall. And if left unchecked, it may allow for water which ultimately would reduce the stability and strength of the structure.

However, there are ways to avoid the total collapse of the home and to make it as strong as its original construction. This article will examine Tuckpointing, its meaning, the tools used, and the difference between Tuckpointing and repointing, among other things.

What is Tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing is the act of replacing old mortar joints with new ones using a color similar to the brick. Then, it involves lining the mortar with a contrasting color that makes the mortar joints distinct and beautiful.

Types of Mortar Repair or Filling

Pointing
This is the actual filling of the mortar joints during the initial building of the house. It is the first filling that takes place in the mortar joint.

Repointing Brick
Repointing is the removal of old mortar and replacing them with new ones. This process ends here.

Tuckpointing
It is the process of removing old mortar, replacing them with new mortar using a color similar to the bricks while lining the new joints with a contrasting color.

Other Types Include:
  • Recessed Pointing
  • Groove Pointing
  • Flush Pointing
  • Beaded pointing

Tuckpointing vs. Repointing

Tuckpointing and repointing are very similar as they involve the same process. The only difference is that tuckpointing does not end where repointing stops but takes an extra step.

Repointing is just the process of replacing the mortar joints with no extra care put into the aesthetics or look of the mortar and the brick.

While tuckpointing is repointing and ensuring the color of the mortar joints is similar to the bricks, while lining it with a contrasting color which will seem to be the mortar joint alone.

Note that tuckpointing is concerned about function and aesthetics.

Tools used during Tuckpointing

There are several tools used in tuckpointing. It would help if you had these tools to ensure the job is done neatly and effectively. Some of the tools include:
Mortar Trowel
A mortar Trowel acts as a tool to spread the mortar along the joint. Therefore, the mortar must be of the right size by being wide enough to ensure the job is done quickly and thin enough to ensure the trowel can comfortably go in the mortar joint.

Plugging Chisel and Hammer
Before a new mortar can be placed in the mortar joint, you only have to remove the old mortar. The plugging chisel and hammer are the right tools for the job. It will effectively remove the old mortar and make it seem like there was no mortar in the joint before.

Tuckpointing Grinder
The grinder is also used to remove old mortar and cut through whatever wall component needs to be cut through.

Masonry Brushes
Masonry Brushes are your best bet as it ensures that placing the mortar and its lining is done nicely and neatly.

Other tools include:
  • Mortar Gun
  • Mortar mix

Pros of Masonry Tuckpointing

It returns beauty to the wall
The wall is often exposed to the sun and other weather conditions, which takes off the color and makes it fade. But with tuckpointing, aesthetics is returned to the wall as the mortar brings out the wall's original color with a distinctive twist.

Corrosion
The wall, after a long time, needs to be maintained because water, wear, and tear, and other effects have affected the strength of the wall or house. But with tuckpointing, this process is stopped, and the health of the wall and the tuck point brick are restored.

Saves Money
For some people, a crack in the wall could mean bringing down the wall and rebuilding, but it isn't always the case as a mason doing a tuckpointing repair can create magic by eliminating all the cracks and making the tuckpointing brick and walls whole again.

Protects the Wall
Apart from stopping the corrosive effect, tuckpointing protects the wall from adverse weather that might continue the corrosion. Thus, tuckpointing is not only a gag; it is a protector.

Cons of Tuckpointing

It is only for the outer part of the walls
Tuckpointing and every other pointing can only be done for the outer part of the wall. It stops corrosion and protects the outer part while the inner part is left almost unshielded.

This means that any damage or crack made in the inner part of the walls before the pointing process is made cannot be repaired by the pointing process.

Cannot be done during heavy rainfall
While it is agreed that you cannot build a home during heavy rainfall, you should be able to protect your home from the damage the rain could cause. However, tuckpointing might not help in this instance, which means water could enter the mortar joints and even inside the bricks unhindered.

Tuckpoint Repair

Repairs of the mortar joints of brick walls are cost-effective and can be long-lasting if done effectively. When a  tuck point repair is done, the goal is not only for the brick wall to be restored but also for it to look new. However, the functional aim is not lost while trying to be aesthetic.

Tuckpoint Foundation

Tuckpointing is often done on the brick foundation where the old mortar/foundation is removed, and another is placed there.
